Using gas in your home
There are 2 types of gas available for use in appliances in your home:
- reticulated natural gas – distributed by pipeline
- liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) – usually available by bottle.
Not all Queensland homes have access to reticulated natural gas (i.e. gas supplied from the mains supply).
Compatible appliances
Household appliances use either reticulated natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
Different burners are needed in appliances for the 2 types of gas. Appliances can be converted to use either natural gas or LPG.
All gas installations and conversions must be carried out by a licensed gasfitter.
Search on the internet or ask your appliance retailer for information about licensed gasfitters. You can also find a gasfitter using the Queensland Building and Construction Commission contractor search.
New natural gas connections
To check if there is a reticulated natural gas pipeline in your street, call the connections hotline on 1300 001 001, or visit Energy Made Easy.
Choosing or changing your natural gas retailer
To locate and choose a reticulated natural gas retailer that services your area, use the Energy Made Easy website. You can compare gas retailers and their prices.
Gas retailers buy natural gas and sell it to individual customers.
Your gas retailer will bill you directly for the gas you use.
Contact your gas retailer if you have questions about any of the following:
- your contract
- your bill
- the prices you pay
- payment options
- disconnection or reconnection.
Regional councils supplying gas
There are reticulated natural gas networks in Roma (owned and operated by Maranoa Regional Council) and in Dalby (owned and operated by Western Downs Regional Council).
If you live in these locations, contact the relevant regional council for more information about gas supply for your home.
Gas distributors
Queensland has 2 main reticulated natural gas distributors: Allgas Energy and Australian Gas Networks. Information about your distributor will be included on your bill.
Tips for choosing or switching natural gas retailers
- Check the new gas plan saves you money by comparing conditions, benefits and costs (using your current bill and retailer advice) against new potential plans.
- Read the conditions if you are offered a discount.
- Check the payment terms for flexible options.
- Check for exit fees.
- Use the cooling off period (10 days) to think about your new contract - you can change your mind.
- Check your gas contract at least annually and reconsider your plan and check for discounts.
Choosing your LPG gas retailer
If your property does not have access to reticulated natural gas (i.e. mains supply), you can use LPG. There are a number of companies that provide LPG gas in delivered bottles or refills.
Search on the internet for information about LPG gas suppliers and gasfitters. If you are buying a gas appliance, your retailer may be able to provide information as well.
